VSCO Pro - very much a beta
Three days ago (12/22) I decided to upgrade to VSCO Pro because they had implemented cloud sync last month. The idea of being able to use the app on my iPad, iPhone, and the web was very tempting so I updated my regular subscription to Pro. I’ve had a bit of time to play with it today and I hate to say that this product is very much a beta and only three days in I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
The cloud sync is a dumpster fire right now. Not all changes sync (because they haven’t implemented all features in the web version yet) and sync is not reliable. It’s so unreliable right now it’s basically useless.
This image shows two photos of a Santa inflatable that I imported into my studio and edited. I then tried to sync them which resulted in an error every single time. Now when I try to edit the file that should be local in my studio I get a “Downloading media…” message. What is it downloading? It hasn’t synced the file.
This image shows my studio on my iPad. The picture of the panettone box and coffee bags is missing. Why are there missing images? Doing a standard “pull to refresh” seems to make it sync but there is no indication that anything is happening.
Eventually I am able to get edits to sync between devices but there is no indication that sync is happening. Is it pull to refresh? Is it switching pictures? What is causing the sync to happen? They claim it’s automatic but that is not my experience so far.
What is more frustrating is that the online help for syncing problems basically just says “check your connection”:
Syncing to the VSCO Cloud requires a network connection, so make sure you have a good connection. If you do have a good connection, retry the sync.
My internet connection is fine. It’s always fine. Retrying the sync kept resulting in the same error. I finally had to delete the items from my studio. Thankfully I had already saved copies with the edits I made to my camera roll!
The worst thing? Even after being released in September (with a beta period having started earlier in the summer) they haven’t matched all of the features that the iOS application has. Want to blur something? Nope. Vignette? Nope. Here is what isn’t supported as of yet:
- Dodge & Burn
- Split Tone
I should have done more research before I upgraded to Pro. This thing is half-baked right now and I hope that they make significant strides in the next 12 months. At the very least I didn’t pay full price since I already had an active subscription for the regular product through April that I’m getting a refund for.
